Another interesting one Sapna!
Well, I do agree with what others are saying that when you reach the level of such people, you don’t need to reply to comments. However, I personally would never do such a thing because I value each commentator who takes out their time to visit my blog and leaves me a comment. If they can do that much, the least we can do is reply their comments – and being busy is no excuse whatsoever I feel, nor are the reasons to think that we have reached ‘that level’ where we don’t need to respond to comments.
Besides the above reasons, I think when you receive comments you get to know how people have liked your work, the pros and cons etc., and similarly when you visit blogs and leave comments, you are reciprocating and telling the blog owners what you feel about their work. Commenting is a major part of Blogging I feel, and should always be there, though I agree, it is time consuming and often times we slacken in covering all the blogs we want to. But somehow we need to chalk out ways – isn’t it?
Thanks for sharing, and Divya sure is getting better with her cute cartoons.

Nice to see john Chow here, and I guess he has his own way of working things out and that’s his key to success. Whereas I’m one of those people who believes bloggers should respond to comments, if you read back on Chow’s blog he came into it a rich guy who said he wanted to prove that he could make money by blogging, and that’s what he’s done. He never said he wanted to do anything else, so I think we got what we should expect. During his “personal” period when he was putting up lots of stuff about his family, he was responding to comments, but otherwise… he’ll answer questions, as someone above said, but otherwise that’s about it. I guess John Chow must be an expert in SEO who doesn’t think he needs comments on his blog because he gets so much search engine traffic? I suspect not all internet marketers see themselves as ‘bloggers’, in which case they’re less likely to value comments – but they’re making a big mistake, in my view, if they don’t encourage and respond to comments from their customers.

Blogging and commenting go together. I always read comments after reading the main post. It may be impossible to respond to every comment when you become ‘famous’, but then, putting aside a little time to do this can make a lot of difference to your readers, and I am sure they will appreciate it.

Sapna
Hi Sapna,
Oops… What is TumTum dear?
I’ve heard of John Chow but haven’t really explored about him though
Mmm… Sometimes it might be not what we see actually dear. When it comes to popular ones, they are tend to be more busy and have to prioritize their tasks dear. I’ve seen some fans almost trying to get a reply from reputed personalities for valid questions but then get angry that they didn’t get a response at all.
Even it applies if we get more attention and lead to success, ’cause even you achieved your long term objectives, you can’t stop right there
More and more work to do and have to sacrifice a lot of time than you imagine. It’s a choice though. When it comes to that level, that blogger may mostly think about the value he offers and engagement comes next as I feel. Well, we have to go there to experience what really it is though
Imagine you have 400 comments on a post to take care of and you didn’t reply mine as I just share my opinion. I can say “Sapna should engage more with people and reply my comment”
But it’s what I think but the real scenario is you are even busy to respond all of them as you need to work on writing next posts and take care of your kids.
But I think if they can’t reply, it’s best to show off a valid reason there that they read all comments but respond only who need it the most
However if they able to manage the engagement eventhough it takes time to reply all of ‘em, they might get People’s Choice Award
Anyway we all have to change strategies as we move on.
So I think John Chow may not wrong there but he can think about alternatives on engagement. The other aspect is as he has built his reputation, he might think the value alone is enough as people always follow him to achieve success
Unless he was a successive character, you wouldn’t find his blog and comment at all, right?
It’s a broader topic to think about in this matter Sapna. Just imagine what if you were John Chow and how you would spend your time
Cheers…

Just let me know once you have gone through his blog and get the fair idea of # of comments he has to reply for.
Thanks and waiting for your response.
Sapna
No, not at all Sapna
As I never been there, I was suppose to see over 50+ comments or something which he needs to address the needy ones, but the number of comments there is easily manageable as I feel.
Anyway I can see he’s posting valuable content for audience everyday which is a very helpful technique on generating more traffic
Not comments though. Also you can see some popular blogs that focus on generating content and gets comments too but not getting replies for ‘em. Quite a business approach
I’ve got to know you through commenting as I value engagement with the audience, but same attitude may not goes with everyone else Sapna. You know, it matters to hang out with like minded folks.
However I won’t mind not getting replies at John Chow’s place after all, if he’s not up for it dear
We can’t force or blame on someone. It’s their choice and let it be. I may read it and comment if I need to point out something and back to my work.
May be the priority he gives to his blog and the community is low. I don’t know whether he works somewhere else and busy enough to keep up with all.
Try asking a question in each of your comment so he will reply to you after all

Sapna
Hi Sapna,
I’m not sure if you wrote this post as link bait in order to get traffic or if you are genuinely peeved with him not replying to his comments.
There are two sides to every story. I think you need to understand that top bloggers such as John Chow just don’t have the time to reply to every single comment. It’s a very time consuming thing to do and is the reason why some top bloggers such as Seth Godin have removed comments altogether.
I speak to John frequently on Google chat and I will tell you this – he’s one of the hardest working bloggers I know. In addition to running several large websites and blogs pretty much single handedly, he also has a wife to spend time with and a small child to take care of. What do you think is his priority? His family, or, to reply to every single comment that is left on his blog.
I spent 30 minutes today replying to comments on my own blog and my blog has about 1% of the traffic John Chow. I suspect he’d have to spend at least 5 hours a week replying to comments in order to connect with all commenters. It just isn’t practical.
You need to realise how busy top bloggers are. They need to prioritise their work and replying to comments and social media mentions is never going to be top of their list.
For the record, in my experience John is very active in replying to comments when compared to most other top bloggers.

To your first point I would say that I have not shared link of this infographic with anyone, and the discussion has been limited to my blog only.
You need to appreciate the fact that I have kept the discussion limited to his engagement on his Blog and I have not gone overboard on any other stuff and at the same time praising his money minting skills as well.
I believe Seth Godin has set a great example to follow. Now going forward I would PREFER the commenting policy on the blog should make it very clear and at his level or for that matter for all great bloggers who have been very choosy in replying back. The commenting policy should make it very clear that replying back is “MY PREROGATIVE”.
Commenting and replying back is the daunting task and I FULLY agree with you and also it is matter of choice as well as priorty, person wants to build the relationship or want to go in for sales pitch.
Glad to know that you have a great experience with John Chow and I also expect the same for me in near future.

Hi Sapna,
If I know perfectly then according to my point of view every business needs some kind of interaction, it doesn’t matter how big or small your business is, you can’t run a successful business by keeping your mouth shut. Business is all about interaction and relationship. And opening up to people is the best way to establish a connection, a relation.
I know lots of bigwig blogger’s who cares about their readers, they always have time in their plan to get back to their readers, because they know, because of their readers their blog exists. it’s as simple as that.
And if they don’t care about me then hell I’d care about you. There are lots of other blogs out there and some are much better than yours, if you show your cold attitude then deleting your blog from my list is only going to take a second, not more than that. And I’d be more than happy to do that.
Care for your reader, and their opinions.

I can see that this post created a lot of buzz. I used to comment on John’s blog during the first year of my blog and like he said, he only replies if someone asks him a question.
So one time he wrote a “how to” post about setting up caching on your blog I believe, and in it he was telling us to do something that I did not know how to do. So I asked John in the comments if he could write another post describing “how to do” what I asked him about in my comment.
Sure enough John replied back to me in the comments that he would write a post about it and sure enough the next day he did write a post about it.

I don’t visit John Chow’s blog so I really can’t say since I don’t know the guy but I do know that you don’t have to have a blog in order to make money. It’s a tool to meet people and build relationships.
Obviously John took a different route but in order for him to get more people interested in what he has to share he has started blogging. He’s probably so big now that you’ll never see him responding to comments and some people can do that because of where they are in their business and the name they’ve already made for themselves.
Unfortunately, we aren’t of a John Chow stature. At least not yet!
Cute infographic as always Sapna… Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hi Sapna
Love your infographic. Well you got John Chow over to your blog. That is quite an accomplishment. Bravo for that. I agree with you, interaction is really important. Unless someone has a ton of funds available to them or they are super famous, well the rest of us have to connect or we just don’t get very far. I kind of like it to anything else in life…did you forget where you came from. Some people get so big and famous they disregard the ones that helped them get there or others that were like them.
Good for you to raise a little ruckus!

HI Mary,
Thank you Mary.
I totally believe that engagement on the blog can give a way to the great relationship. I don’t know why the attitude when one is pitching or making a sale to one of us only.
By disregarding others and showing arrogance one is not going to gain anything for sure when internet marketing is all about relationship and making connections.
Thanks Mary for sharing your thoughts and commenting.

Well I’m learning something new everyday. I did go over to check out Chow’s blog since I’ve never heard of him. He is kinda like the Super Store. Anytime you become “Corp” you lose that huggy feely thing. I think there’s room for everyone on the internet Big Fish and small fish.
Personally at this time in my fresh career online I’m loving the relationships I’m building and also learning so much from eveyone.
I especially love the commenting because that is how we connect and build that relationship.
I guess if you have thousands of “customers” your focus changes.
Great infographic as usually…they are always very entertaining.

HI Tonya
Very rightly said, he is more of Super store and I think you have a great point here, when one become corp the feeling of relationship goes off.
I’m also cherishing my presence online and it has been through this only I have been able to make great friends. I don’t want to loose anyone of them and this is really now the purpose of my blogging.
Thank you so much for your inspiring comments.

LOL John Chow is for making money. He doesn’t lie about it or beat around the bush. He is very straight forward. But what he lacks in “micro” interactions (comments on his posts) he makes up for in his free presentations that he has through podcasts, interviews, youtube videos etc. He tells you how he does it.
The only issue I have isn’t even with him – its just the fact that he is able to be so successful because he is already successful. The hard part is how to get off the ground to begin with!

HI Jason,
I think I can now very well equate John Chow with money. He is far off from the concept of relationship marketing. Those micro interaction Jason at times are really very interesting and can take the blog to the next level.
You are already off the ground now and keep on doing this consistently.

comment is a reward to a blogger for his services and to intract with community. i always looking for a comment on my blog. But i also agree that after a limit it looks like a burden for famous bloggers.
HI Rupali
Comment really gives a way to engagement which further becomes a great platform to know about your readers as well. Most of the readers who have commented here really love engagement and so do I.
I will be visiting your blog very soon.

I think a blog is just too alive (not like a static website) that comments, interacting with readers is just a big part of the blogging process.
thanks for the share, Sapna!

I think comments are an important part of blogging; however, I’m most interested in receiving comments from regular readers who are not necessarily bloggers.

Hi Sapna,
Great infographic as usual.
I actually understand John Chow. When your blog business scales to that level, you either employ a Virtual Assistant to respond to comments or you respond to only those that need a response from you.
It’s a numbers game, you know…

John Chow is not only the man who don’t like comments and interaction among online community but one of my idol and guru Seth Godin also dislike the same .As per his blog post says that comment and interaction affects own thinking and writing goes as online community wants which fully destroys the fundamental or root thinkings of own mind.

Seth Godin is my husband’s idol as well. Seth Godin has blocked his comment system which is much better for the community as well, they very well know iin advance that they won’t be able to comment. But what if the comment system is enabled and still it’s one way street?

I have not visited John’s blog before (but will head over for a visit after this) but I agree with so many of your readers that it is rude to ignore comments, your readers have taken time out to read your post and to write a comment, if he does not have the time to reply then hire someone to do it for him if he is that successful or do not allow comments full stop!
I know he has come over and left you a comment but maybe it was because you have created a lot of attention to the fact that he does not reply….
Another great infographic Sapna, I am so looking forward to reading a post from you that is all text, are you considering doing this in the future?
Hope you are enjoying your weekend

I simply do think you’re being unfair to John Chow.
Hi Sapna, nice blog. I reached here from Ehsan’s blog. I also receive much less comments on my blog and the reason behind this is the less interactivity with fellow bloggers. Will try to increase comments on my blog in future.

I think John Chow doesn’t have enough time to read through hundreds of comments he is getting daily. I am amazed by how you take time in answering every single comment over here. I would also recommend that you get a commenting plugin like disqus or livefyre.

John Chow might have made it big with his own techniques (which are awesome by the way), but a “naive” blogger must have to resort to commenting no matter what. There is no easier way to get noticed and promote your articles.
Once you reach a stage, then I think you will think twice before commenting, the reason being “lack of time” maybe.

Dear Sapna Ma’am,
The info-graphic has really worked in a beautiful way to deliver and serve your purpose behind it.
According to me you must not be a “MONEY ORIENTED PERSON”. Your customers are your everything. Its because of them you are able to sustain into the markets. Such perception gives only a short term success. With passing of time you will lose them because acknowledgement process works only when it is executed from both the sides. Even your customers contribute a lot in making up your IDENTITY.
Really an awesome article.
Keep updating.

Personally I value each commentator who takes out their time to visit my blog and leaves me a comment. My highest value is in sharing experiences and knowledge. By replying others, I get to share more.
Thanks, Sapna, for this great discussion!
